The Sathanur Dam is one of the major dams constructed across the Pennaiyar River. Sathanur Dam is constructed across the Thenpennai River in Thandarampet taluk among Chennakesava Hills. The dam can be reached by road 30 km (19 mi) from Thiruvannamalai Town. It was constructed in 1958. There is also a large crocodile farm and a fish grotto. Parks are maintained inside the dam for tourists to visit and the gardens have been used by the film industry


The reservoir has a capacity of 7,321,000,000 cu ft (207,300,000 m3) with a full level of 119 ft (36 m). An area of 7,185 ha (17,750 acres) of land is benefited by the left bank canal and 100 ha (250 acres) of land is benefited by the right bank canal in Thandarampet Thiruvannamalai blocks.
One can reach from Lord Arunachala temple by road which takes about half an hour drive by car. Sathanur dam is built across the Pennaiyar River that originates at the Chennakesava hills. A large area of agriculture lands are benefited through water stored in this dam.


The other added attraction of this Sathanur dam is its picturesque location. This nature’s beauty draws millions of tourists every year from all over the world. And people who visit Thiruvannamalai never fail to visit this dam. There is also a beautiful garden and a children’s park as part of this dam. A small zoo is maintained here near this dam with some wildlife varieties.
Sathanur Dam is the oldest hero in Cinema Industry. All the films in midst of 1960-1980 were taken here. Beautiful parks were maintained here with lawns and parks.


One swimming pool is maintained inside the dam to enjoy the tourist during the visit to dam. A large Crocodile farm and a fish grotto is maintained here to know the life of Crocodile and fish culture.

For the delight of visitors, bear, porcupine, hare and birds like pigeons are reared here. To attract the children and youngsters Swimming pool, Crocodile park, Flower park, Children's park (with mini-zoo) suspension bridge, Fish farm are also presented here. Colored statues find place and they appear exactly like real men. 
A beautiful Botanical garden has been raised on the sheltered lower side of the dam culturing varieties of ornamental plants and their flower adds charm to the spot.
