Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple, Woraiyur – The Temple
Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple is said to be the second temple among 108 Divya Desam temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The central shrine has the image of Azhagiya Perumal in sitting posture. There are paintings on the inner walls of the shrine of Nammalvar. The temples were painted during the early 1800s and has images of Matsya and Narasimha avatars of Vishnu, Vaishnava Acharyas, Azhwars, Vaishnavite mythology, the law of justice and dharma as enunciated by Ambarisha.
The shrine of the Nachiyar faces north (in this case facing the Ranganatha temple, Srirangam, which is North of Woraiyur) and it is the only Divya Desam where she has a north-facing shrine. The temple has a 5-tiered Rajagopuram (gateway tower). There are separate shrines for Ramanuja and Nammazhwar, one of the twelve azhwars and the author of Thiruvaimozhi. The vimana, is called Kamala Vimanam. Lord and Mother are looking at each other facing north. Those facing problems in matrimonial affairs perform Archana to Mother Kamalavalli Nachiar on Aslesha (Aayilyam) star day for successful results.
As the land happens to be the birth place of Mother-Thayar, all prominence goes to Mother in the temple and is praised as Nachiar Koil. There is procession deity in the sanctum for Mother only. There is no Utsavar found in this sthalam as Sri Ranganathar of Sri Rangam came here to marry Sri Lakshmi and the Utsavar of Sri Rangam is considered to be the Utsavar of this Sthalam too.
The Moolavar of this Sthalam is Azhagiya Manavalan. Srirangam Uthsavar Namperumal gets the name Sri Azhagiya Manavalan when he comes to Uraiyur. He is found in Standing (Nindra) Thirukolam (position) facing his thirumugham towards North direction along with "Prayoga Chakkaram". Prathyaksham for Ravidharman and all Devars (330 crores).
The Thayar of this Sthalam is Sri Kamalavalli Nachiyar (Vaasakshmi). Also named as "Uraiyur Valli". She is found in Sitting (Veetrirundha) Kolam facing North direction. The Position of the Thaayar is similar to position of a Bride who sits along with the Groom during marriage. The above positions are called as "Thirukalyana Avasaram". In this Sthalam, Mother is giving her Seva in two different ways. One is Irundha Seva and the other one is Kidantha Seva. Combining these both Sevas, she is giving Seva as "Urayum" (from sitting Seva to sleeping Seva) Seva.
