Kannayiram Udayar Temple, Kurumanakkudi, Mayiladuthurai

Kannayiram Udayar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kurumanakkudi village in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. This temple is also called as Kannar Kovil. Presiding Deity is called as Kannayiram Udayar / Kannayiranathar / Sahasranethreswarar and Mother is called as Murugu Valar Kothai Nayaki / Kodaiyammai / Suguntha Kunthalambigai. This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 71st Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 17th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.

History

The Temple is believed to be around 1500 years old. The Temple was completely reconstructed by medieval Cholas and extensively renovated by Pandyas, Nayaks, Marathas and Nattukottai Chettiars. This place was called as Kannar Koil during 7th Century CE and now called as Kurumanakkudi. Kurumanakkudi was called as Kuru Vaniyakkudi in the inscriptions of Rajaraja Chola I in the temple. The last consecration ceremony was conducted on 09th February 2004. This temple is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 07.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.00 PM to 07.00 PM.

Festivals

Aavani Vinayakar Chaturthi (Aug-Sep), Aippasi Annabishekam (Oct-Nov), Thiru Karthikai (Nov-Dec), Karthigai Somavaram (Nov-Dec), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan) and Masi Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) are the festivals celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams is observed regularly.

Prayers

Devotees pray here for to remove obstacles in their marriage proposals, relief from eye related ailments and job opportunities. People who indulged in adultery can pray to the Lord Shiva for forgiveness. Those seeking child boon are advised to offer milk and fruit nivedhana during the Arthajama pooja and do annadhana. Those suffering from vision problems light deepas (lamps) in the temple. The zodiac signs are inscribed on the ceiling of the Parvathy Shrine. Those facing problems due to the planetary movements according to their horoscopes perform kumkum archana to Mother Murugu Valar Kothai Nayaki for removal of the adverse effects.
