Open-air museum, Mammallapuram

Open-air museum, Mammallapuram
The Open-air Museum is located very close to the Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram. This reflects the cultural heritage of Tamils.  The objects on display are mostly from granite by 200 sculptors, includes chains of stone, ornamental wheels, etc.
It is a newly established museum specifically devoted to displaying artifacts related to the sculptural history of Tamil Nadu. Dating from the pre-Sangam era onwards, the objects exhibited here are sculpted mostly from granite.

There are ornate, heavily carved wheels, stone chains, figurines and utensils along with a large variety of tools including chisels and mallets used for sculpting. You'll get a valuable insight into the historical and cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu through the gradual evolution of sculptural art depicted here.
